Michigan sportsmen disappointed at cancellation of dove hearing (2/6/2004)

Without explanation, a Senate committee chairman cancelled a scheduled hearing and vote for Michigan's dove hunting bill.

House Bill 5029, the bill to make Michigan the 40th state to hunt doves, was scheduled to be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee on February 5 in Lansing. Committee Chairwoman Sen. Shirley Johnson, R-Troy, abruptly cancelled the hearing on Wednesday.

Take Action! The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and the Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign, the coalition of sportsmen's groups established to pass HB 5029, urge Michigan sportsmen to continue contacting their senators. They should ask for a "yes" vote on HB 5029, and also ask that the vote be held soon.

Michigan sportsmen can find their senators and get contact information by using the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org or going to www.michiganlegislature.org and clicking on the "Related Sites" link. Sportsmen may also call (517) 373-2400 and ask for their senator.

The Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign was organized by the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance to pass HB 5029. Members include ALS Enterprises Inc., Commemorative Bucks of Michigan, Huron Pointe Sportsmen's Association, Michigan Bear Hunters Association, Michigan Bow Hunters Association, Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners, Michigan Hunting Dog Federation, Michigan State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Michigan State United Coonhunters Association, Michigan Trappers Association, National Rifle Association and the Professional Kennel Club, Inc.

Michigan United Conservation Clubs and Safari Club International are also supporting the effort to gain a dove hunting season.
