House Bill 5029, introduced by Rep. Susan Tabor, R-Delta Township, passed out of the House Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Committee by a vote of ten to zero with one committee member abstaining. "We are very pleased that the committee members listened to their constituents and voted yes for dove hunting," said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance vice president for government affairs. "It is a big step, but only the first of many that it will take to see the bill become law. Sportsmen need to continue to contact their representatives in support of House Bill 5029." To help generate support for the House floor vote, the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and its partners in the Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign have organized a rally in Lansing on November 4. The rally will take place at the State Capitol's main entrance steps at 9:00 AM. Sportsmen will then be taken to meet with their legislators as a demonstration of their support for HB 5029. Over 1,000 sportsmen are expected to travel to Lansing for the event. Several conservation leaders are scheduled to speak at the rally. They include the National Wild Turkey Federation's (NWTF) CEO Rob Keck, rock and roll legend and avid sportsman Ted Nugent, National Rifle Association President Kayne Robinson and U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Senior Vice President Rick Story. House Bill 5029 sponsor, Rep. Tabor, and other legislative leaders are expected to speak as well. The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance recently helped organize the Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign, the coalition of sportsmen's organizations working to pass House Bill 5029. Members include Commemorative Bucks of Michigan, Michigan Bear Hunters Association, Michigan Bow Hunters Association, Michigan Hunting Dog Federation, Michigan State Chapter of the NWTF, Michigan State United Coonhunters Association, Michigan Trappers Association, the National Rifle Association and the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance. The newest campaign members are the Huron Pointe Sportsmen's Association and the Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners. Also supporting the effort to pass HB 5029 are the Michigan United Conservation Clubs and Michigan Chapter of Safari Club International. Conservation clubs that want to become part of the Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign should contact the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance at (888) 930-4868 for more information. Michigan sportsmen can contact their legislators today and tell them to vote "yes" on HB 5029.
