The program benefits sportsmen by encouraging property owners to open their land to hunting and other wildlife-related recreation. Assembly Bill 396, sponsored by Assemblyman Tom Harman, R-Huntington Beach, passed the Senate by a vote of 22-15 and the Assembly by a vote of 58-10. It now awaits Gov. Gray Davis' signature. The Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement Program consists of a partnership between the California Department of Fish and Game, nonprofit conservation groups, and other interested nongovernmental organizations. The bill authorizes the partnership to enter into voluntary agreements with property owners to make their land available to the public for wildlife dependant recreation activities such as hunting and fishing. Similar programs exist in Kansas and Minnesota. Take Action! Sportsmen should inform Gov. Davis that Assembly Bill 396 will expand hunting opportunities for sportsmen. Remind him that this legislation is vital considering the current reduction of most programs during the state's severe budget crunch. Sportsmen can contact Gov. Davis at (916) 445-2841 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org and urge him to sign AB 396. CopyrightÓ U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance- www.ussportsmen.org
