The ALF Press Office reports that 100 acts of animal and environmental terrorism were performed in North America during 2002. Forty-eight acts were carried out in the name of animal liberation and 53 targeted natural resource consumption, development and other environmental and political issues. According to the report, the fur industry bore the brunt of 13 animal liberation actions. Hunting, fishing and trapping were also issues of focus. Property destruction occurred in 35 of the 48 animal liberation actions. The damage included three acts of arson. Activists used terror tactics to protest environmental issues, as well. Of the 53 actions in the name of environmental protection and "Earth liberation," fire was used 20 times. The arson damage totaled over $6.5 million. The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance has launched a nationwide campaign to combat terror acts in the name of animal rights and extreme environmentalism. It has prepared draft legislation for lawmakers who want to fight animal rights and eco-terrorism in their states. Legislators in Texas and New York have already introduced versions of the bill.
