Activists throw fake blood on police during anti-fur protest (12/11/2002)

Massachusetts-

Two animal rights activists were arrested after allegedly hurling red paint on two Boston police officers during an anti-fur protest.

A pair of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) protestors donned fur coats and splashed fake blood on themselves in front of a Macy’s department store in Boston. Police say the two women threw what PETA claims to be washable red paint on the main doors and sidewalks of the store during an hour-long protest. Two police officers that regularly patrol the area approached the protestors and were splashed with the paint also.

The activists were arrested and charged with willful and malicious destruction of property, a felony, and disorderly conduct. As police led them from the scene, the women chanted, “Trapped by greed! Fur is murder!”

A spokeswoman from Macy’s responded to the incident saying, “We sell merchandise that our customers have requested us to sell. There is a part of the population that would like to purchase fur and fur-trimmed items.”
