trappers (8/27/2002) Purdue University has recently come under fire by animal
rights advocates for its association with Fur Takers of America (FTA), a
national pro-trapping organization.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is objecting to
the school’s involvement with the FTA’s Furbearer Management Course. Graduates of the Furbearer Management Course are eligible to
receive two college credits from Purdue University. The course, sponsored by Purdue University, instructs
students about trapping techniques, furbearer biology and many more
aspects of the oldest outdoor sport.
The HSUS has issued an alert to its members to contact Purdue
University and recommend that it “sever its ties with the FTA and its
Furbearer Management course.” Take Action! Trapping
is an integral part of every sportsman’s outdoor heritage. The FTA
program is vitally important for the future generations of trappers and
for wildlife management. Sportsmen
should contact Purdue University and thank the school for sponsoring a
program that teaches information regarding wildlife biology, animal
damage control and the business end of trapping.
It is good to know that sportsmen have the support of a reputable
institute of higher learning. Send your comments to Martin C. Jischke, President, Purdue University, 1282 Grissom Hall, West Lafayette, IN 47907-1282, or Victor Lechtenberg, Dean, School of Agriculture, 1140 Agricultural Administration Building, West Lafayette, IN 47907-1140.
