bill in Connecticut that would have made criminals of law-abiding dog
owners has been defeated. Senate Bill 78 that would have over-regulated how dog owners
should treat, house and transport their dogs, had passed the legislature
and was vetoed by Governor John Rowland. The veto came behind a U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance campaign
supported by the Masters of Foxhounds and the American Kennel Club.
Sportsmen contacted their legislators and prevented an override of the
veto, ensuring the bill’s defeat. The legislation would have been the most restrictive law
against hunting dog owners in the nation, establishing strict
sheltering, tethering and caging requirements. Overall, it was vague and
unenforceable. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance continues to watch for
similar animal cruelty bills that may appear in any state legislature.
We want sportsmen to be forewarned so that they can take immediate
action. Congratulations to Connecticut sportsmen and sportswomen who
responded to alerts about the bill. Governor John Rowland should also be commended for standing up to the legislature and the Friends of Animals. Sportsmen can express their appreciation by writing to Governor Rowland, State Capitol, 210 Capital Avenue Hartford, CT 06106. CopyrightÓ U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance- www.ussportsmen.org
