Connecticut legislator cuts ties with animal rights organization (6/19/2002)

Connecticut-

A state representative in Connecticut is disassociating himself from a national animal rights group, noting that the group is doing more to impede animal welfare than advance it.

Representative G. Kenneth Bernhard (R-Westport) broke off his affiliation with the Darien-based, Friends of Animals (FoA) following a disagreement over Senate Bill 78, a bill to impose restrictions on dog owners.

The FoA did not believe the bill was strict enough, but Bernhard said that the group was not willing to accept compromises that were necessary to pass the legislation.

"I admire their aspirations for an animal utopia," said Bernhard. "Unfortunately, they’ve become a roadblock for improving the standard of care for animals."

A scorned Priscilla Feral, FoA president, responded to Bernhard:  "He used his position with the legislature to bully the organization. We want to abolish particular cruelties and exploitation and he wants to play it middle-of-the-road as a legislator."
