Senator Bob Smith honored for Lifetime Achievement by anti's (5/6/2002)

The man known by sportsmen as the "Most Anti-Hunting Senator" was recently recognized by the nation’s largest animal rights organization for his anti-hunting views. Several other elected officials also received acknowledgement.

Senator Bob Smith (R-NH) received the Humane Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2001 Humane Awards, hosted by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal rights group, and sponsored the Fund for Animals, Farm Sanctuary and Doris Day Animal League. Senator Smith is no friend of sportsmen, as he has supported federal trapping bans and even accepted a campaign contribution from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) President Ingrid Newkirk.

Other Senators and Congressmen who received Humane Awards include California’s Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer, West Virginia’s Democratic Senator Robert Byrd; Oregon’s Democratic Congressman Peter DeFazio from the Eugene area; California’s Democratic Congressman George Miller from the San Francisco Bay area and California’s Republican Congressman Elton Gallegly from the Los Angeles area.

The only state representative to be honored by the anti’s at the ceremony was Maryland Delegate Sharon Grosfield. This Democrat from the Washington, D.C. suburb of Kensington, received the title of "2001 Maryland Humane Legislator of the Year" for her involvement in the creation of the Maryland Task Force on Non-Lethal Wildlife Management, a task force established to find non-lethal means of managing wildlife in the state.
